Exploring professional pathways in permaculture – global research study

At the Permaculture Network, we are occasionally approached with initiatives that aim to strengthen the wider permaculture ecosystem. This is one of them.

A research team connected to Utah State University and the Permaculture Institute, Inc. is currently conducting a global study on professional pathways in permaculture. The focus is on a question that many of us have encountered in practice:

How can people actually make a living with permaculture?

If you are active in permaculture, as a teacher, designer, or practitioner, this survey may be relevant to you. It takes around 10 minutes and does not collect identifying information.

Below is the original message from the research team:

"We find ourselves in an unprecedented moment in history, where the need to foster positive environmental change is stronger than ever before. To help grow the number of us empowered to apply the permaculture design framework professionally, a team of permaculture educators have launched a global research study to gauge professional permaculture pathways, spearheaded by Roslynn McCann (roslynn [dot] mccann [at] usu [dot] edu). This project is grounded in a central question: how can we better help aspiring permaculture professionals build viable livelihoods?

The survey is entirely voluntary, contains no identifying information, and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. The instrument has been approved by Utah State University’s Institutional Review Board, protocol #15833. Results will be shared at USU Permaculture and through the Permaculture Institute, Inc. Alternatively, you can sign up to receive the results, here.

If you choose to participate, you are also contributing to a broader understanding of how permaculture work can move beyond passion projects and into viable livelihoods.

➡️ Your possible next step: take 10 minutes and share your experience in the survey.
